Descrição do itinerário

Technically unproblematic trail with wonderfull panoramic views practically during the whole route.

Before the ascent to the Gibidumpass, i.e. on the left side of the solitary valley Nanztal, the trail leads along suonen, historic alpine water conduits which are still in function. Between Gibidumpass and Gspon, the trail leads via light larch forest and forest reserve Sädolwald.

The trail is especially charming in June/July (= vast areas with blossoming azaleas) and in the autumn (="golden" larches.)

* During snow melting or shortly after stronger/longer rain, it is good to have a second pair of shoes, just in case - for crossing "brooks" and "waterfalls" in Obers Fulmoos.

The Simplon Hospice of the Augustiner Chorherren

Through a decree of 21 February 1801, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered to build a hospice on the Simplonpass. In 1806, the Napoleonic road throught the gorge Gondoschlucht and over the Simplonpass was put into operation, in 1808, a post office. By the fall of Napoleon in 1812, the first floor of the hospice had been built. After 14 years, during which the construction became a ruin, the Augustians took over the completion of the building. They run the hospice to the present day, including daily masses, spiritual courses for the public, and school camps. In the vicinity of the hospice is located a stone eagle, the historical witness of the WWII and the landmark of the Simplon Pass.

Gspon

Good to know for hikers: Gspon is located in the region with the least rainfall in Switzerland. Good to now for football fans: Gspon´s football pitch ranks as the highest in Europe, at approx. 1 920 m above sea level. In 2008, the Mountain Village European Championship was held there, similar to the Euro 2008 that took place in Switzerland and Austria in the same year.
