Track recorded on October 14, 2018. Party of 5. Day parking passes are available at the Artists Point Parking. The trails were supposed to be closed this late in the season, however it was a late autumn and lots of hikers were still out. The next change in weather is likely to bring snow.
This is one of the most popular hikes on Mount Baker, with wonderful mountain meadows, clear views of Mt. Baker from several angles, and a walk around scenic Lake Ann with its backdrop of glaciers and mountains. The wind ripples on Lake Ann (among other things) made for a photographers delight on the day.
There is a sudden drop in temperature towards the 6:30 PM sunset at this time of year, and expect sub-zero (deg C) night temperatures. The final few kilometres on the way back are in a shaded valley so plan departure time from Lake Ann accordingly. There was a rush of wind down the valley as soon as the sun dipped over the western ridge line.
At a smaller parking area at the Lake Ann trail head.
The much larger Artists Point parking with big washroom facilities is a bit higher up the main access road. Day parking passes are available at the Artists Point Parking.
Emerge from forest into a grassy meadow
the trail in this forest was very muddy on the day, as the sun shines directly onto it for a long period, and melts the heavy night frost
More recent volcanic ash deposits cling to the sides of some slopes, reminding that this volcano has violent eruptions and remains active.
The climb section commences here, continues steadily up to the pass into Lake Ann.
