Descrição do itinerário

A beautiful loop starting from my buddy’s house in Hsarat, following a dramatic ligne de cretes to reach the abandoned, ghost village of Bjerrine. Then, continuing in the silent river to visit Mar Antonios cave-church of Hsarat. On our way back we went via a different route passing by Mar Youhanna El Chir to form a beautiful loop.
Bjerrine: A village in ruins, its a hot spot for hikers, adventures and story lovers.
Its a must visit place to add to ur bucket list. hiking is the only way to reach the slumber town since roads leading to the village no more exists. While on the road, descending towards The village, u can observe how beautiful this village is, on top of the hill, with approximately dozen of ruins and Mar Elias church thats the only structure not deteriorated.
N.B. : we found 2 snakes, which is super normal and they were not dangerous, they were just hiding and crawling away.
- next to each ruin there is a well, some of them without lids. Just watch ur steps while wandering in the village.
It is said that the village was abandoned in 1915 during WWI, more than 100 years ago. Habitants closed their homes at night, gathered next to Mar Elias church and went to seashore and fled trying to immigrate to the USA escaping worsening living standards, starvation, economic crisis, and the Ottoman tyrannies who they were obliging men to join compulsory military service, adding on top of it the locusts invasion. Some say that inhabitants crammed the ship and sinked, others say that they reached Brazil. But none of either story are confirmed so far.
Most of the houses are formed with multiple rooms, a basement and a well, which indicates the richness of their owners back in those days.
After, we went down the valley, walked in the silent river to reach a point where we took our left and started venturing up towards Mar Antonios cave-church. A beautiful sacred place, encrusted in the cliff, that was once dwelt by the hermit St. Antonios. Don’t forget to have a candle with you and lit it in there.
In summer i advise u to do it in the afternoon to avoid the heat.

This is used to store mainly their wheat harvest. They throw it from the small opening in the roof and there is another opening in the bottom of it to retrieve small portions from the stock.

    Hello
I'm going on Sunday to this trail.
Are we allowed to park on the starting point?
I don't have wikilok premium so I won't be able to navigate the trail.
Is it hard? Or I'll find my way?

Hello hope you are well . I wanted to know is it a hard trail , like can I solo it or is it preferred to have company?

Hi Ornella 😀 the trail is not too steep and not technically difficult. However, I suggest you don’t go in the river section if you’re alone and hesitating about the trail difficulties (should be clear on the map where the river is and there are some waypoints/photos titled silent river to help you navigate it). Plus, it might not be accessible due to river flow in the winter. Unfortunately, you’ll miss the historical cave of Mar Antonios! But if you liked the area you can come back to visit it 😅
